New for 2023

British Canoeing Awarding Body are pleased to announce the launch of the NEW Safeguarding Refresher eLearning

This new elearning is an additional option for learners and doesn’t replace the current Safeguarding Refresher: Social Media elearning: both refresher courses will be available for learners, along with the Introduction to Safeguarding elearning.

Safeguarding Refresher_protecting children_adults at risk_positive safeguarding culture.

If you have already completed the current Safeguarding Refresher: Social Media and now need to extend your Safeguarding, the Safeguarding Refresher: Positive Safeguarding Culture will be your next elearning.

If you haven’t needed to do a Refresher elearning yet, you have a choice of two courses: either Safeguarding Refresher: Social Media or Safeguarding Refresher: Positive Safeguarding Culture. You can choose the topic which best fits your needs.

You don’t have to do the current Social Media refresher first before the new Positive Safeguarding Culture refresher. Completing either eLearning for the first time will extend your Safeguarding for 3 years, you don’t have to do both at once.

The elearning has 3 modules:

  • Refresher Core module, reviewing key safeguarding information including identifying and reporting concerns.
  • a new Positive Safeguarding Culture module, focused on good safeguarding practice, how to embed it in your paddlesport club/organisation and what some of the positive outcomes can be.
  • Quiz module

The Safeguarding Refresher: Positive Safeguarding Culture elearning costs the same as current Safeguarding elearnings – £10 for national association members and £20 for non-members. The course will be available in the British Canoeing Awarding Body elearning store.

British Canoeing Awarding Body are pleased to announce the launch of the NEW Safer Recruitment eLearning

What is Safer Recruitment?

Safer Recruitment is a set of practices which are essential to ensure paid staff, contractors and volunteers are suitable to work with children and / or Adults at Risk.

Is this eLearning for me?

This course is for any employer or deployer such as paddlesports clubs and organisations, who provide services to children and / or Adults at Risk.  If you recruit volunteers to work with vulnerable groups, you will need to follow the same kind of process although it may need to be adapted to be more informal.

What does the course cover?

There are 6 modules in the eLearning, covering the full recruitment process from creating role descriptions through to the applicant starting in the role. The eLearning will help you consider and review your organisation’s current practices and procedures to make them ‘Safer’.

The Safer Recruitment eLearning is not a Safeguarding course or a recruitment course. It focuses on the importance of including measures in your recruitment process to deter, reject or identify people who might abuse or may not be suitable to work with the children or adults at risk your organisation provides services for.

The Safer Recruitment eLearning will cost £30 for British Canoeing, CANI, Canoe Wales and SCA members and £60 for non-members.

10 CPD points will be awarded for completing the eLearning.

You can find the course on the British Canoeing Awarding Body eLearning store NOW!

The Introduction to White Water Safety course is designed to support paddlers to become effective group members on grade 2 water. This one day course is suitable for anyone starting out on their white water paddling journey, wanting to explore the role of an effective group member and learn simple strategies and safe skills that can provide the tools to solve common paddling issues. Paddlers will rescue from their preferred craft, which can include kayaks, canoes and stand up paddleboards.

This new addition to the suite of British Canoeing Awarding Body White Water Safety training courses is to support those paddlers either new or novice to the white water environment.

This one day course is ideal for clubs and groups that provide pre-season training and we hope that there are many coaches in these organisations that would become providers enabling them to deliver a formal Awarding Body course, and gain support from orientations, community events and additional resources.

The programme provides those attending plenty of practice time on how to be a positive member of the group whilst on the river, whatever craft they paddle.

Lee Pooley – Director of Coaching & Qualifications

The Introduction to White Water Safety is a 6-hour programme that consists of 9 modules. This can be delivered in a day or as a series of modules and is available to all ages.

British Canoeing Awarding Body is delighted to launch the NEW Tutoring in the Paddlesport Environment (TPE) eLearning.

This eLearning focuses on providing high quality tutoring in different settings, aligned to our educational philosophy. It’s full of great information to help both new and experienced tutors consider their current practice.

British Canoeing Awarding Body - Tutor tutoring some learners in a paddlesport environment

The eLearning takes around two hours to complete, and we would encourage reflection between the activities. There is also an optional activity that encourages either devising a new session plan or changing an existing one based on the learning. The TPE eLearning will count as 10 CPD points, once completed, and will be added to your National Association record.

Anyone involved in providing paddlesport activity will understand the importance of learner engagement, whether you deliver coach qualifications, leader and safety training courses or personal performance awards. This eLearning is designed to provide clarity of our responsibilities as a tutor, as well as explore the finer points of tutoring in a paddlesport environment
