Become a BCAB Performance Coach

Coaching is one of the most rewarding and impactful ways to contribute to the world of paddlesports. Whether you’re working with elite athletes or dedicated paddlers looking to improve, the role of a Performance Coach is critical to helping individuals achieve their potential. For those seeking a structured and highly respected pathway into performance coaching, British Canoeing Awarding Body offers one of the best programs available.

Becoming a Performance Coach is a way to blend your passion for paddlesports with a commitment to professional excellence. Here’s why you should consider becoming a BCAB Performance Coach and how it can shape your career and impact the wider paddlesport community.

What is a Performance Coach?

The Level 4 Performance Coach Award is designed to support you to further develop and refine your coaching, enhancing your ability to use sophisticated coaching practices to improve the performance and long-term development of paddlers.

As an experienced, well-practised coach, you will already have existing skills, knowledge and understanding in your chosen discipline/environment, and your specific learning and development needs will be unique and wide ranging. Given this existing base of skills and experience, it is important that you steer the direction and focus of your learning in areas that are most relevant and pertinent to you. The programme’s core function is to provide support and guidance so you can maximise your learning through appropriate challenges and relevant opportunities.

This is an ideal programme for intrinsically driven, experienced coaches who want to get better at coaching the paddlers they work with, and for those who seek recognition that their delivery meets enhanced levels of sophistication.

Why become a BCAB Performance Coach?

1. Access to a prestigious training programme

BCAB is widely recognised for its rigorous and respected coach education pathways. The program blends theoretical knowledge with practical application, giving you a well-rounded foundation to excel in your coaching career. You will be developing highly sophisticated, individualised coaching practices, underpinned by deep understandings of interpersonal relationships.

2. Enhance your professional credibility

Having a BCAB regulated Performance Coach certification can elevate your professional standing within the paddlesport and broader sporting community. The certification is highly regarded, not only in the UK but also internationally, and is a strong testament to your commitment to coaching excellence. Whether you want to coach in a club, work with athletes and national teams, or operate as a freelance coach, the qualification is a mark of quality.

3. Help learners achieve their dreams

There’s nothing quite like helping someone reach their full potential. As a Performance Coach, you’ll have the chance to guide learners and athletes through their training and development, providing them with the tools and strategies they need to achieve their personal best, whether that’s winning a competition or accomplishing a personal goal. You become a crucial part of their journey, sharing in the highs and lows of their progress.

4. Be part of a thriving paddlesport community

Paddlesport coaches are part of a thriving, supportive community that spans the globe. By becoming a Performance Coach, you’ll join a network of like-minded professionals who are passionate about developing the sport and nurturing learners’ development. This community provides opportunities for collaboration, learning, and sharing best practices, helping you continuously improve your coaching abilities.

5. Develop personally and professionally

Coaching is as much about your personal development as it is about helping others. The process of becoming a Performance Coach will challenge you to think critically, reflect on your own practice, and grow as a learner. You’ll gain valuable skills that are useful in all areas of life, not just sport.

Steps to becoming a BCAB Performance Coach

The learning journey is fluid and personalised to every coach who undertakes the programme. The key components of the award are the same but, as an experienced coach, you will steer the direction and focus of your learning in areas that are most relevant to you. The journey can be personalised every step of the way, by understanding the capabilities and skills you arrive with, you decide the skills, knowledge and experience you want to learn and develop.

Online Mentor Sessions: Your development and thinking is supported through online mentor sessions with a trained Mentor who will support your reflection, stimulate insights and action, and support you to make sense of your practices and thinking.

Community of Learning Events: Connect with experienced coaches across disciplines to challenge, refine, and expand your coaching techniques and knowledge. These events provide a unique space to explore, grow, and inspire your practice. These events are available as face to face, online or blended opportunities.

Coach Developer Support: A trained and experienced Coach Developer helps you grow through real-world coaching experiences, focusing on the specific skills and knowledge you need. You choose the topics that matter most to your role, and sessions typically take place in practical coaching settings. You’ll develop through discussion, feedback, observation, and reflective practice, all aimed at enhancing your coaching.

Coaching Philosophy Task: Throughout the Performance Coach programme you will be challenged and supported to further develop a deeper understanding in how your values and beliefs shape and underpin your coaching practice. This topic will be threaded into sessions with your Mentor and Coach Developers, as well as the Community of Learning events and you will be provided with support materials to help you develop your thinking in this area.

Assessment: To achieve your Performance Coach Award qualification you need to successfully complete a practical assessment focused on your coaching skills.
